Klauth

“Big day today,” Billy says. “You’ll earn your keep today.”

Silent, I glare at the human. I grab the crate I’ve been ordered to move and carry it to the shelf. Billy follows alongside. Other humans work in the warehouse, but they ignore us. I have no friends in this group. I don’t like any of them. Every one of them is self-centered, egotistical, and have no sense of brotherhood.

I’ve tried to speak to the other Zmaj. The one who has been experimented on like me, but I suspect that the humans are keeping us apart. I don’t know why, but it’s become obvious. The hidden rooms and tunnels that the marketers use is not that extensive. It is not possible that the two of us could avoid seeing each other as little as we have.

Every time I see him there’s something familiar. An idea that I know him. Knew him, more accurately. I knew that male. A sense of kinship, understanding, and a desire to be in his space. Not in any sexual way, but as if he was something to me.

Perhaps it is only the shared experience of having been experimented on, since both of us have similar modifications. Somehow, I think it’s more than that, but memory fails me. Anything before becoming aware of Emma is a blank. An empty swirling void filled with the fog of the bijass.

When we first saw each other, I thought there was a look of recognition on his face. Perhaps I’m wrong, though. Or it was only recognition of a fellow survivor. I could be reading more into it than is there, but that nagging sensation of having forgotten something important hasn’t left.

“You’re not going to ask more questions?” Billy asks.

I set the crate onto the shelf and turn around to face him. I don’t speak, letting my stare say it all. He meets my gaze for one beating of my hearts before dropping his eyes and muttering something unintelligible.

“Where is the other one?” I ask.

“Other?” he asks, avoiding direct eye contact.

I take a step closer, towering over him. Sweat beads on his forehead as his eyes dart round the warehouse, spotting his fellow humans. Though several of them pause their work to look, no one makes a move closer.

“The Zmaj.”

He swallows hard, trembles, and shakes his head.

“You think I know? How would I know these things? I’m the messenger here.” I wait. Silence is often the best interrogation tool. “He’s busy. We all got jobs to do here.”

“Where?”

Two of the other humans move towards us, and that gives Billy back his confidence. He straightens and meets my eyes.

“You got a job today, that’s what to focus on.”

My hands clench into fists so tight my claws dig painfully into my scales. I growl as the bijass surges in my head. My vision turns red, but the voice of reason stops me from acting. Emma is out there, and these people are my only hope of joining her. I unclench my fists and take a step back.
